Harp & a Monkey

Award-winning song and storytelling trio Harp & a Monkey specialise in poignant, uplifting and melodic short stories (original and traditional) about everyday life, love and remembrance – the extraordinary ordinary.

The Lancashire outfit’s work has been described as “bold and brilliant” by The Observer, “fantastic” and “fascinating” by Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2, “inventive” by Mojo magazine, “excellent” by The Guardian, and “unique” by folk legend Mike Harding.

With four acclaimed albums under their belts, the multi-instrumentalists (expect banjos, harps, accordions, guitars, glockenspiels and more) are regulars on the national concert circuit and guarantee poignancy, humour and great audience rapport at their live shows.

This versatile collective has been commissioned to undertake bespoke songwriting, soundtrack, film and art projects for the likes of Sky Arts and the Department of Sport, Media and Culture, and their shows, which are suitable for all ages, are not to be missed.

Steve Turner is a pioneer of highly sophisticated English concertina song accompaniments;he is a singer and multi-instrumentalist, playing mandolin and tenor banjo and accompanies himself on the concertina. He has performed at folk festivals, clubs and concerts throughout the UK and internationally. Steve began his career in Manchester at the end of the ‘60s, with Geordie band “Canny Fettle”, touring for 8 years and making 2 albums. After winning the UK Melody Maker’s national “Stars of the 80s” competition in 1979 he turned professional and went on to release 4 solo albums. He produced his 5th album in 2008, the highly acclaimed “Whirligig of Time” which featured UK luminaries Martin Carthy, Nancy Kerr and Miranda Sykes. He has since released a further 4 albums with his latest 9 th album “Curious Times” featuring Martin Carthy and receiving excellent reviews.
Steve’s performances are characterised by strong melodies and a warm connection with the audience. For me, in terms of song accompaniment, he is the foremost Concertina player of his generation - the master! Scold's Bridle

Sue Bousfield and Liz Walmisley have been telling it from the woman’s point of view through folk song since they were in their teens. They can command and enthral an audience. Especially poignant are their Fleetwood tales and songs of wives left on the shore struggling to manage, many written by Ron Baxter. Humour is never far away however, and the music and harmonies are second to none. One of the UK’s best female duos, not to be missed. www.scoldsbridle.co.uk
